Matteo Pistono

Matteo Pistono is a writer and meditation teacher. His books include Roar: Sulak Sivaraksa and the Path of Socially Engaged Buddhism, Meditation: Coming to Know Your Mind, Fearless in Tibet: The Life of the Mystic Tertön Sogyal and In the Shadow of the Buddha: One Man’s Journey of Discovery in Tibet. Lesson 1 :
What Is Meditation?

In this first lesson, Matteo will introduce the process of meditation and describe the amazing impact that it can have on your life. He will provide you with the foundations on which to build your daily meditation practice, with guided meditations such as body scanning and discovering your breath. You’ll learn about the powerful connection between the body and the mind, and discover how to remain present and mindful in the most stressful of situations. Lesson 2 :
Focusing on the Present Moment

Matteo will teach you to let go of your thoughts and to focus solely on observing the object of meditation in the present moment. Mindfulness is the key to a non-distracted mind and, by developing this skill, you’ll be able to find focus and clarity throughout your meditation practice.

Lesson 3 :
Cultivating an Open Presence

In meditation, much importance is placed upon awareness. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to utilize the five senses to open yourself up to your experiences. Matteo will equip you with the skills you need in order to fully know these objects of meditation through awareness, before turning awareness back on itself. The function of meditation is not to suppress the rest of the world, but to open ourselves up to it completely, and through practice you’ll be able to feel true power as you assert your mind and reclaim control from external experiences.

Lesson 4 :
Meditation Off the Cushion

One of the most wonderful aspects of meditation is that it can be practised anytime, anywhere. You’ll learn that there are many positions and postures in which you can meditate, including walking, lying down and even while eating and drinking. These different postures and guided meditations can build a crucial bridge between daily routine and formal meditation practice, allowing you to integrate regular meditation sessions into your life with ease. 

Lesson 5 :
Meditation, Contemplation and Thinking

Thoughts can be useful tools in helping you to learn your habitual patterns, and provide an invaluable insight in coming to know your own mind. In this lesson, Matteo will teach you to release your awareness beyond the restrictions of thinking, and to recognize and abide in the spaciousness you find as a result of both your physical and mental actions. Through changing your relationship to your thoughts and reactions, you’ll be able to address both internal and external experiences in an emotionally grounded manner.

Lesson 6 :
Working Within the Mind

Through meditation, you can train your mind to adopt a knowing awareness. Rather than fleeting external experiences, which can leave a sense of dis-ease and dissatisfaction, a constant knowing awareness and internal focus can lead to contentment and empowerment in all aspects of your life. Matteo will also teach that you don’t have to meditate upon just yourself and your body – meditating upon nature is a fantastic way to expand your panoramic awareness and hone your skills.

Lesson 7 :
Moments of Liberation

Deep meditation can allow absolute freedom, and resting in the space between thoughts is a great opportunity to practise both your awareness and spaciousness. In this lesson, Matteo takes you through one of his favourite exercises to help you practise and embrace the cycle of stillness, movement and awareness. Meditation is not a single act, but an ever-changing process that is always in flux, and through allowing our awareness to be completely unbound, we can shine a light on our present experience with confidence.
